Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness are officially ending their nearly three-decade marriage.

Furness initiated the uncontested divorce in New York's Suffolk County Supreme Court on May 23, according to court records. The filing comes more than a year and a half after the former couple announced their separation in September 2023.

The actors, who co-starred in the 1995 Australian show "Correlli," married in 1996 and share two adult children, Oscar and Ava. Their 2023 separation was revealed in a statement to People, which read, "We have been blessed to share almost 3 decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth."

Per their website, the case has been disposed of which means simply one that is considered closed by the court because the complaint or charges have been resolved in some manner. After a settlement is reached, the final divorce documents are prepared and sent to the court for signature. Depending on the County, this procedure could take an additional 2 to 3 months. In New York, a divorce is final when the judgment is signed by the judge, and the judgment is entered in the records of the County Clerk. It is the entry in the county clerk's office that completes the divorce process. Until it is entered, the divorce is not final.

You must wait 90 days from the date the divorce was filed or the date your spouse was served, whichever comes later, to finalize your divorce. After you file for divorce, the papers are served on your spouse and then returned to the Court.

Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness have put their $39 million USD New York apartment on the market amid their messy divorce. Realtor.com reports that the former couple are offloading the stunning five-bedroom 'triplex' apartment in the West Village that they purchased back in 2008 for  $21 million USD.

Reasons for the Divorce

In May, Deborra-Lee alluded to Hugh's alleged affair with his now-girlfriend as she broke her silence about his 'betrayal' since legally filing for divorce.

'My heart and compassion goes out to everyone who has traversed the traumatic journey of betrayal,' she wrote in a statement.

'It's a profound wound that cuts deep, however I believe in a higher power and that God/the universe, whatever you relate to as your guidance, is always working FOR us.'

She continued: 'This belief has helped me navigate the breakdown of an almost three-decade marriage.'

The grounds for divorce in New York include both fault and no-fault reasons. Among the fault-based grounds, you may get a divorce if the judge finds that your spouse has committed adultery.

Per Domestic Relations Law § 170, finding of adultery must be based upon clear and convincing evidence. Mere suspicion that one of the spouses committed acts of adultery is not enough. Also, a divorce may be granted even if only a single act of adultery is found. One may prove adultery with circumstantial evidence.
